Famous Tapestries of Kings and Queens

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Tapestries were quite popular back in the old days basically due to a couple of reasons. One, because these huge textiles when hung on the walls of castles and homes can ward of the cold. Two, these are status symbols for the powerful and the wealthy. And three, the portability of these wall decorations allow the owners to transfer them from one castle resident to another. This is also why tapestries have been conveniently passed down from generations. This is also a reason why quite a number of old tapestries still exist today. Today, there are some famous tapestries much like the famous works of art of painters and sculptors.

Probably the golden age of tapestry making can be traced to Paris, France during the 12th century. But the revolutionary war that occurred in the country forced the tapestry weavers to migrate and eventually settling in Flanders which now is Belgium and the northern France regions. Among the oldest tapestries today is the seven tapestry series Apocalypse of Angers. The date indicates it was commission in the late 1300s. The tapestries measure 16.5 feet high and about 80 feet long, quite the standard during those times.

Subjects for tapestries vary but cultural and societal influences play major roles in this. Tapestries depicted subject matters from nature and landscapes to fantasy, historical accounts and scenes to Biblical stories, from Greek mythology to ordinary hunting scenes of the aristocracy, and from impressionist and modern art. Basically any designer can create a design for a tapestry but everything lies on the how skillful a weaver is.

Historians and conservationists recognized the importance of these tapestries not only for their visual value as an art work but also as their significance in history. In fact, the World Heritage Sites identified some of the more famous tapestries around the world, most of which are included in declared heritage sites.

You may not consider everything you just read to be crucial information about Tapestries. But don’t be surprised if you find yourself recalling and using this very information in the next few days.

Among the famous tapestries include those found in the cathedrals and castles of Cracow in Poland. Also mentioned is the Golden Mountains of Altai Pazyryk carpet which is dated in the 5th century BC Pazyryk and said to be a product of an Achaemenid carpet production centre. Seljuk carpets in Istanbul are also among the Heritage’s list of famous carpets.

And of course the 105 carpets prepared by Le Brun for the Louvre in Paris as well as the tapestries by Rafael which hang in the Sistine Chapel in Vatican are worth to mention.

Other famous tapestries include the Sampul tapestry which is now in Urumqi Xinjiang Museum in China. The work is of woolen origin and probably was created somewhere in the 3rd and 2nd century BC. Another ancient or historic work is the Hestia Tapestry in Egypt which is dated to be around the 6th century.

One of the more popular tapestries, but definitely the largest one, is The Apocalypse Tapestry which whos the scenes from the Book of Revelation. Created between 1373 and 1382, the whole thing was supposed to be 140 meter or 459 feet long. However, due to damage, what remains is just 100 meters. The Apocalypse Tapestry can be viewed in Château d’Angers, in Angers, France.

Another work housed in Paris is the six-part piece La Dame à la Licorne which translates to The Lady and the Unicorn. There are a lot more famous tapestries that probably fell one way or the other in the hands of queens and kings found in the Spanish royal collection. You can find a huge collection of Flanders tapestry here.

Making Compost: Getting Your Hands Dirty

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

If you’re a gardener then you should not mind getting y our hands dirty. In this line of work, you need to handle plants, soil, rocks, fertilizer, soil conditioners, etc. and not all times a pair of gardening gloves is handy. At times using glove can prevent you handling some delicate stuff. In this case, you have to get down on your knees and get your hands dirty. And nothing is dirtier that making compost.

Composting is a the process were biodegradable materials, usually manure and household wastes, are turned into soil-like output by combining them with a little air, water and nitrogen. Is that too technical for you? Well compost is a dark, crumbly, soil-like substance which functions as soil conditioner, mulch, and fertilizers. It feed your garden soil the microorganism that most plants need to grow healthy and strong.

When making your own compost pile, it would be ideal to find a place near your garden and yet it has enough concealment to not affect the overall look of your garden. Does that make sense? Just like one of the famous movies say ?hiding in plain sight?. If such is the case, a cleverly painted compost bin would help make the area neater. A corral or a fenced area would do fine.

After setting up your composting area, you start composting by arranging a 3:1 ratio of brown and green organic materials. Green ingredients contain lots of nitrogen while the brown elements contain lots of carbon. Together, they form the basic foundations of a compost file. The green organic components of gardening include grass clipping while the brown components are the dry leaves and other wood products.

If you’re worried about the possible bad smell that would come out of your compost pile, then don’t. When the ratio of greens and browns is correct, you don’t have to worry of any bad smell from your compost pile. Compost should have this earthy smell and not smelling like rot. If you smell the later then there could have been some things that might have been included in the pile or the ratio of the greens and browns components is not correct.

It seems like new information is discovered about something every day. And the topic of Composting is no exception. Keep reading to get more fresh news about Composting.

One way to make certain that your compost pile has jus the right combination of greens and browns components, is to get a pile of green material and put it in you compost bin. Follow it up with two piles of brown materials. Keep this gong until you have a nice pile of leaves and grass that measures about three feet. At this high, you probably have a base measuring 3 feet also. One good thing of having this large a compost pile is that the greens and browns can easily and quickly break down.

If you want, you could add in a bucket of already finished compost to the newly formed pile. This will help start the process and begin the microbial activities in your compost pile.

Make sure that you add enough moisture to the pile as well. Keeping the compost pile damp will help quicken the breakdown of the organic materials. Add water to the pile and feel a sample. It should be damp, somewhat like a sponge. See, I told you your hands will have to get dirty.

There is a need to turn over your compost pile at least once a week to keep it loose allowing air into the pile and quickens the process of decomposition. After two months, you should have decent quality compost by now. The original materials you used should no longer be recognizable.

As you can see, making compost is quite easy and requires not too much of your time.

Are Deals on BTE Hearing Aids by Mail Too Good To Be True?

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

This article explains a few things about Hearing Aids, and if you’re interested, then this is worth reading, because you can never tell what you don’t know.

BTE hearing aids can be very costly if you go to your hearing professional to get them. Some people with hearing loss enjoy the privacy and convenience of ordering BTE hearing aids by mail. They feel that they can get a better deal and save themselves a trip to the doctor’s office. But, are these deals too good to be true?

One thing to be aware of is that so-called hearing aids that do not meet FDA guidelines and simply amplify sound are actually known as listening devices. They are very cheap, both in price and in quality. Some BTE hearing aids by mail like this cost as little as $6.99 per ear. In this case, you probably get what you pay for.

If sellers are not going through an ENT doctor, they will be required by the FDA to make sure that you sign a waiver and turn it in to them. They want to make sure that burden rests squarely on your shoulders. And, maybe it should. You do want to make your own decisions about BTE hearing aids by mail, and this is what you will have to do if you choose not to be fitted by an ENT.

If your Hearing Aids facts are out-of-date, how will that affect your actions and decisions? Make certain you don’t let important Hearing Aids information slip by you.

In any case, most hearing aid sellers require the results of a hearing test, which can be done by an audiologist. They will not sell the BTE hearing aid by mail without one. An audiologist is simply a person who does tests on hearing They are not medical doctors and cannot determine if you have an illness or other medical condition. However, they can deliver an audiogram that can be used to adjust the settings on a hearing aid.

The best deals on BTE hearing aids by mail, according to price, are to be found on E-Bay. One reconditioned hearing aid was recently sold there for under $70. It was a Beltone brand hearing aid that was said to have cost over $1000 new. The Siemens High Power 278 BTE aid was sold for around $200. Siemens is a well respected brand name as well. Also available by signing a waiver was the Siemens Infinity Pro, which was priced at about $400. If you can’t afford a more expensive set, then you might consider trying this type of BTE hearing aids by mail.

Some sellers of hearing aids by mail expect to deal with hearing professionals. These vendors sell products that usually run the buyer into the thousands for a fraction of the cost. The Siemens Intuis is now being offered for a slim $499, while its retail value is around $1800. It is equipped with directional microphones, an auto phone device, and technology that reduces noise and feedback. It is a totally digital aid. There is a similar deal offered in another brand of hearing aid that has similar features. This one lists for $2200 and sells on E-Bay for a mere $399.

It may be to your advantage to buy BTE hearing aids by mail. It is always in your best interest to explore the possibilities. Just remember to find out what it is that you are actually getting for your money. After all, a few hundred dollars spent sounds a lot better than a few thousand, but if the hearing aids aren’t what they claim to be, it may be a few hundred dollars wasted. And, who needs that?

Types of Tapestry Designs

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Are you looking for some inside information on Tapestries? Here’s an up-to-date report from Tapestries experts who should know.

Tapestries are made of different fabrics. There is wool, cotton, chenille, silk and a lot more. Some of these look good as curtains while others are ideal to put on the wall or floor.

Regardless of what fabric you buy, stores that offer these sell this to you by the yard. The price varies on two things, the material and the design so you could be paying less than $10 or a little over $20. Here are some of the designs that you will likely find when you go out shopping.

The first is the unicorn and the reason why you will find these in stores is because it has magical and religious implications. It is magical because it represents fidelity, desire for progeny, fidelity, love and marriage. It is also religious because it represents Christ’s incarnation, passion and resurrection. One of the most famous is the Lady of the Unicorn which took more than 15,000 people to finish.

Another design is the medieval tapestry. Here, you have knights on horseback or in battle, a coat of arms and a few religious figures. This is best explained by the fact that each one artwork was human, personal and spiritual.

You also have Renaissance tapestry and by looking at it, you might even say that what you see depicted there is better than the real thing because it produces the illusion of what life should be. The original copies of these tapestries costs more than $200,000 a piece. It is a good thing you don’t have to pay for that when there are replicas readily available.

For people who are very religious, you have to get a tapestry similar to those made by Raphael. You have to remember that he created numerous tapestries often referred to as cartoons which until now can be seen in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Here, you will get to see images which depict the Acts of the Apostles but Raphael is also known for the Madonna.

The information about Tapestries presented here will do one of two things: either it will reinforce what you know about Tapestries or it will teach you something new. Both are good outcomes.

If you are a nature lover, you will enjoy getting Verdure tapestries as it depicts forests and landscapes with a few animals, hunters and mythological creatures.

Similar to Verdure tapestries are the Aubusson. This is great to have if you have a farm because the picture shows open lands and cottages in the countryside. Historians believe that this was done to demonstrate wealth and power.

Here at home, we have the American tapestry. Yes this also depicts reality but in an American setting. Some of those you seen in stores are made in Belgium while others come from China.

If you like flowers, there is the floral tapestry. Some of the designs include a bunch of flowers in a vase or wreathes. People enjoy having this in their home because it brightens and warms up any room.

A combination of floral, modern and medieval tapestries can be found in chenille tapestries. The best part about this design is that they don’t only make good wall décor but this can also be used as blankets, rugs and throws.

There are other designs to choose from should you decide to have tapestries in your home. Before you buy one, make sure that this will fit nicely on your wall or wherever else you want to put it otherwise you will have to cut it.

Parents Play a Huge Part in a Child?s Acting Career

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Some parents push their children into acting. But did you know that training the child how to sing or dance is just one of the things you have to work on?

This is because most casting directors look at other factors before accepting them. They look at the life of the child outside of acting and what extra curricular activities do they engage in. The ideal child actor they are looking for is someone relaxed and confident in his or her abilities.

But the casting director will also look at you, the parent because they know that when the child has a project, you will be the one to bring them to work. They will also need your help making the child memorize the lines in the script and encourage them to do their best in front of the camera.

Before you get the part, one major hurdle that every child has to face is the audition.

Some parents hear about the opening from an ad in the newspaper or in television. If you have an agent working for you, he or she will give you a call and tell you when and where it is going to take place.

Now that we’ve covered those aspects of Acting Career, let’s turn to some of the other factors that need to be considered.

Make sure that your child is wearing the right clothes. Ideally, this should be a shirt or blouse without any logo. Never let your child wear the part even if the ad states that they are looking for someone to play a certain character.

Just like applying for a job interview, leave the house early and make sure that you get there 30 minutes before the start of the audition. Once you get there, find the office so you can sign up your child. If it asks you to write down your child’s Social Security Number, don’t because this could easily be stolen and used by someone else.

Your child should be ready to perform the skit the moment their name is called so make him or her relax by letting them do something else like play with their PSP or Gameboy. When it’s their turn, hand over to the casting director your child’s resume and headshot.

If it is a closed audition, you won’t be able to watch it so you will have to wait in the holding area until it is all over. If you are allowed to stay, just watch and keep quiet. There will be time to ask questions later when the child is done and you can talk about it once you walk out the door.

The support you give to your child must never cease regardless of the outcome of the audition. If the casting director says no, cheer them up and tell them that there will be other auditions in the future. Give them positive feedback of how they did up there then later on tell them where they can improve on.

If the casting director has accepted your child, be happy and be prepared to help them excel in their craft because this could be the start of their acting career which could continue well into adulthood. Should they become famous, one of the people they will never forget and have a debt of gratitude to is you, the parent because you encouraged and pushed them to become a star.

There’s no doubt that the topic of Acting Career can be fascinating. If you still have unanswered questions about Acting Career, you may find what you’re looking for in the next article.

The Long Term Outlook of an Acting Career

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Whatever you decide to become in life should be thought about very carefully so you don’t look back and regret having wasted your time and energy. The same goes if you decide to pursue an acting career when there are probably other things you should have been doing.

But because we are living in an edge where we are glued to the television set almost everyday, the employment of actors is expected to grow as fast as the average for all occupations. The challenging part which aspiring actors should know is that competition is going to be fierce.

While you are sending out head shots and resumes to agents, directors and producers, there are numerous auditions held all across the country even if you are already living in either New York or Los Angeles. So, you may go to one knowing that there is another one happening a few blocks from where you are right now.

Some people get lucky when they seen walking on the street and an agent walks up to them and offers them a chance to stardom. Naturally, these are things beyond your control and you just have to accept it. For a lot of actors and actresses who have been in this business for quite some time, the only advise they will tell you is to be both patient and be persistent because it is only those who don’t give up will be able to land a job.

If Hollywood is not meant for you but you have other talents, perhaps you should start your acting career elsewhere like in Broadway or in a theme park or resort. Just like working in a studio, the prospect of finding work in these venues is variable as it fluctuates due to economic conditions.

Truthfully, the only difference between you and Acting Career experts is time. If you’ll invest a little more time in reading, you’ll be that much nearer to expert status when it comes to Acting Career.

You could also find work by performing in a commercial or industrial film that is used for training and educational purposes, in an animated feature, audio book or a computer game. With a few shows or films under your belt, you could get a teaching position in a high school or university drama department so you can share your experience with the students.

But your acting career can also take you to other positions within the entertainment industry. One good example is Clint Eastwood who first started out as an actor and then produced films later on like ?The Unforgiven? and ?Million Dollar Baby.? Both films were acknowledged and given awards.

Ron Howard is another who was a child actor and then later on directed such films as ?Ransom?, ?Apollo 13?, ?Backdraft?, ?Cocoon? and ?A Beautiful Mind.?

If you don’t have money to make a movie, try making a show for a network and if you are able to sell them the idea, you could get a contract for a number of episodes. Should the ratings go well the network will tell you to prepare a new script for the succeeding season.

But the truth of the matter is there are so many actors and actresses around that there are not enough spots to give to everyone. This means that you have will have to endure long periods of unemployment and frequent rejections during auditions. While formal training can help, many directors choose to get the individual who has more experience and talent. These are the ones who can look forward to a great acting career.

Take time to consider the points presented above. What you learn may help you overcome your hesitation to take action.

Issues On Adult Dyslexia Strategies: Holistic Reading

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

There are several programs and methods used in treating dyslexia. One of these is holistic reading. However, this method has undergone through a lot of research and testing, which led to the discovery of some issues against it.

Holistic Reading

A lot of experts believe that one main issue in field of dyslexia, is holistic reading. Because of holistic reading, a lot of people have come to be sight readers that have holistic reflex instead of phonetic readers that have a phonetic reflex.

A holistic reader is someone who perceives each word as if it’s a little picture. It is somewhat similar to the configuration of Chinese ideograph, where the reader would try to think what the word the symbol or character represents.

On the other hand, a phonetic reader is someone who associates letters to sounds. He or she would have to sound out each syllabic unit, which blends into one articulated word.

The Issue At Hand

The main concern here is that, failure to teach someone to read phonetically, but requiring him or her to memorize thousands of sight words isn’t really that helpful, since it can only produce educational dyslexia.

Sight words, by definition, are words that are learned without any reference to the sounds that the letters in the word stands for. Nowadays, a lot of publishers are selling books coupled with audio tapes so that, one can learn how to read using the sight method, even without the help of other people.

Once you begin to move beyond basic background information, you begin to realize that there’s more to Adult Dyslexia than you may have first thought.

If this continues, the individual would only worsen his or her condition. A reading handicap is actually developed even more, without knowing it.

Experts have reached the conclusion that that when an inaccurate, subjective and ideographic teaching technique is imposed on a writing system that uses phonetic-alphabet and demands precise decoding, symbolic confusion is only created. Plus, frustration, cognitive conflict, and learning breakdown, also comes into play.

Knowing If You Are A Holistic Reader: The MWIA TEST

To know if you have become a holistic reader, you can try taking the MWIA test. This is a simple test that is used to measure the degree to which you have become a “subjective” reader.

This test was developed in North Carolina by Edward Miller, who is a former teacher and school administrator, back in the early 1990s. A lot of reading experts and school psychologists say that this method can help identify individuals that are schooled using the Holistic Reading method.

The MWIA test basically consists of two lists of words. The first list has words that are taken from the 220 most popular “sight words”; while the second list is taken from words in ?Why Johnny Can’t Read? by Rudolph Flesch, which are phonetically-regular words used in the first-grade level.

The main difference is that the words found in the first list, although may include about two dozen or more multi-syllable or irregular words, will be very familiar to Holistic readers. However, surprisingly, those words found in the second list may not. A holistic reader does not only slow down while reading the second list, but also commits some mistakes.

On the other hand, a phonetic reader is able to read both of the lists equally good. In fact, the second list may be read faster than the first since the words are easier.

The Big Deal on Industrial Composting Techniques

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Composting is not entirely limited to a small scale. Industrial techniques abound in as much as residential modes of composting are often appraised and praised for its convenience and simplicity. There are industrial techniques that are larger counterparts of the simple residential techniques, while others employ technology and other methods unknown the the novices of composting. Whichever the method chosen, industrial composting is definitely operating on a large scale and may help a lot of production involving healthy soil.

In-Vessel Method

The in-vessel method, as suggested by its name, involves closed reactors. This is synonymous to closed bin composting method in residential scale, but instead of small bins, we are talking of metal tanks or concrete containers that are herculean in size. As a result, factors such as flow of air and temperature are controlled more effectively.

Some companies also put additional cover layers atop the metal tank or enclosed composting container to ensure complete isolation from external elements. Ventilation and insect infestation are often controlled by layering, constant cleaning and additional aeration processes on the affected layers.

MBS technique

MBS is the acronym for mechanical biological treatment system. It is a facility that helps sort materials using the composting technique. The scientific term for composting, in this case, is anaerobic digestion. This has instant practical applications in helping sort waste from residential abodes as opposed to industrial wastes which may be more hazardous and larger in number. This waste management technique is praised for its ability to help ensure biological safety of the environment.

Sheet Composting

It seems like new information is discovered about something every day. And the topic of Composting is no exception. Keep reading to get more fresh news about Composting.

The heap is often the method used for composting, but in the case of sheet composting, it the organix materials are placed directly on the soil you are intending to fertilize. Then it functions as a mulch when it decays there. The common materials used here are alfalfa and mustard. But the only downside is that it can rob off the nitrogen in the soil.

But adding green manure crops like clover can help sustain the lagging nitrogen supply in the roots. Most of the supporters of sheet composting claim that in the long run, this is more effective and able to retain more minerals in the soil than other techniques.

High Fiber Method

Wales invented this high fiber method of industrial composting and with great success so far. It involves rigorous stirring and even distribution of materials all throughout the pile. And then the aeration and surface area of the entire compost pile will improve with this symmetry. The compost pile consists of cardboard, newspapers and other forms of used paper.

It is also well-suited for household composting but then it is currently being performed on a laboratory in Wales for further monitoring. This solution was offered as a way of helping reduce pressure in waste landfills. If paper products are used as a material for composting, excluding the poisonous risk of colored ink, it really has a high potential of success.

ASP Method

ASP or Aerated Static Pile method of composting has both active and passive elements to it. The heap is placed on holed pipings that allow circulation without having to manipulate or turn the entire compost heap, as in other industrial composting techniques.

It completely relies on air for the bulk of the operation, and is extremely helpful for making sure that the passive and active elements are both in play.

You can’t predict when knowing something extra about Composting will come in handy. If you learned anything new about Composting in this article, you should file the article where you can find it again.
